The application of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) has been remarkably increasing in the automotive industry due to its high stiffness, high strength to weight ratio. For application of CFRP to auto body structures, the dynamic material properties of CFRP should be obtained because auto body structures undergo high speed deformation during a crash event [1]. Therefore, it is essential to employ the dynamic material properties of CFPR laminate to numerical simulation for vehicle design and crashworthiness assessment. However, earlier researches about CFRP laminates have focused mostly on the study of strain rate effects at the quasi-static state and extremely high strain rates [2~4]. This presentation shows the experimental results of the material properties of CFRP laminates with various stack configurations at strain rates of 0.001 s–1, 0.01 s–1, 0.1 s–1, 1 s–1, 10 s–1 and 100 s–1. The static and dynamic tensile tests have been conducted with the unidirectional CFRP laminates stacked with [0]4, [90]4 and [45]4 and multi-directional CFRP laminates stacked with [0/90/90/0], [45/-45/-45/45] and [0/45/-45/90]. To measure the fracture elongation during the tests, Digital Image Correlation (DIC) method was employed.
