This paper proposes a new dynamic failure model of spot welds to describe strain rate dependent failures of spot welds in crash analysis of an auto-body. The dynamic failure model has been deduced from experiments with seven different combined axial and shear loads. The dynamic failure loads of spot welds were examined with three different steel sheets of DP590 1.0t, DP780 1.2t and DP980 1.2t to evaluate the strain rate sensitivity of failure loads with respect to material grade. Based on the experimental data, a novel dynamic failure model was constructed based on Song and Huh1 failure model under quasi-static loading condition. The strain rate sensitivity of the failure load was considered with an exponential function of the logarithm of the strain rate. Strain rate dependent failure contours were then generalized from three kinds of steel sheets for AHSS using the proposed model.
