This paper investigates the cyclic tension/compression hardening behaviour
of auto-body steel sheets using a spring-loaded clamping device with the variation of
the strain rate. The spring-loaded clamping device newly adopted to suppress buckling
of a specimen during the cyclic tension/compression tests. Cyclic tension/compression
tests were conducted to observe the cyclic hardening or softening phenomenon of autobody
steel sheets with the variation of the strain rate. To demonstrate the cyclic
hardening or softening phenomenon, the stress decrease due to thermal softening was
calculated theoretically based on uniaxial tensile test results with the variation of the
temperature and the strain rate.
