A study about the dynamic response of materials under impact or blast load is a crucial research topic in many engineering applications such as crashworthiness of vehicles and explosive devices used in aerospace and military industry. When impact or blast load is imposed to a machine, the stress waves propagate through a medium. Consequently the fracture or damage might occur at the structural weak point such as crack. Therefore, the understanding of the stress wave propagation is
very important for the reliable and safe design of machines.
It has been known that the analytical prediction of the propagation of stress waves is very difficult in practical problems since the exact solution of the governing equation becomes complicated to consider discontinuities such as the loading with eaviside step function, elastic unloading and internal reflection in body.
This paper proposes a numerical algorithm of a time-discontinuous variational integrator based on Hamiltonian in order to obtain more accurate computational solution for conservative mechanical system by reducing the dispersive and dissipative errors. The limited kinetic energy and the supplementary momentum are defined in this algorithm so as to decrease the dispersive and dissipative errors respectively. This method is consisted of two loops in each time step. The limited kinetic energy is used in the first loop, and sequentially the supplementary momentum is used in the second loop in each time step. Although the limited kinetic energy is adopted in order to enhance the stability of the numerical solution at the discontinuous region, the Hamiltonian is decreased in the first loop. The numerical solution is newly updated by the supplementary momentum to fill up the Hamiltonian decreased in the previous loop. As a result, the numerical dispersive and dissipative
errors in even discontinuous region can be remarkably reduced for long numerical integration time. Finite element analyses of one dimensional elastic stress waves are carried out in order to demonstrate the accuracy of the algorithm proposed, and this study also compares the accuracy of the algorithm with various traditional methods, such as the time-continuous Galerkin method and the space-time discontinuous Galerkin method.
