This paper is concerned with a pulse shaping technique for very soft materials in split Hopkinson pressure bar tests. The importance of the material properties at very high strain rates has been emphasized for numerical analysis of impact loading condition. Split Hopkinson pressure bar tests are widely utilized to acquire the material properties at high strain rates. In split Hopkinson pressure bar tests, pulse shaping techniques were introduced in order to minimize wave dispersion and to achieve stress equilibrium and constant strain rate deformation in a specimen. Polycarbonate bars are employed for split Hopkinson pressure bar tests for the low impedance of very soft materials. Split Hopkinson pressure bar tests are conducted with various dimensions of pulse shapers. Additionally, finite element analyses of wave propagation in split Hopkinson pressure bars are performed with various pulse shapers as a parameter study. Guidelines for pulse shaping techniques are proposed for more accurate acquisition of data from split Hopkinson pressure bar tests.
